How to prepare to interview
You've called for interview. Therefore, the goal of your resume is achieved.
I would recommend to follow the rules below before you actually come to the
interview:
- Research, research and research. You must clearly understand that the
company you've been called to is really what you want to work for. There
are many links for bad companies, but at least you should verify the following
information:
- What is the product/services of the company and how profitable they are; If
not profitable yet, what are the chances to become such in near future?
- Is it public or private company and who are investors (if any) of the
company; For public companies you may extract some financial information at Sedar's
site.
- Check earnings and revenue of the company;
- What are the plans for the future market expansion, mergers, acquisitions
etc.
- Who are clients of the company and how big they are; is the product/service
installed at the client side or just mentioned on the company's list of clients;
- Who are competitors of the company; How are competitors doing?
- Sleep well before the interview. You cannot learn new stuff in the
last minute and you should be "fresh" during the interview. Your
ability to think quickly and to concentrate on the questions is very important!
- Suit is the must in Canada, period. You might be asked explicitly not
to wear suit, but I would recommend to take a semi-formal dress code even in
this case.
- Prepare at least 3 copies of your resume. You never know how many
people will participate and you should have your resume handy for everybody.
- Read your resume a several times. You should not exclaim
"what?!" if the interviewer ask you a question from your resume. Think
what might be important for this position and where to elaborate on the
potential questions.
- Prepare a blank paper and a pen. I bet you will need them! You may
put them during interview in front of you and to use when you want to illustrate
your experience, to write down the family names and so on.
- If you have a computer, refresh your knowledge about the company you
are applying to. Scroll their web site and try to remember as much relevant
information as possible. You may print this information and to put it in front
of you. It is difficult to keep all details in memory and you may lose details
when asked about products of the company. In this case you would refer to your
papers to refresh briefly the details.
- Prepare a list of questions you
will ask the interviewer. The question:"If you have any
questions" should not be left in silence!!! You must answer this question!
- If you have, prepare the references letters or contact telephones.
- Be prepared to anything. Have a contact phone numbers of your agent and the
interviewer. Do not forget to take a cellular phone, quarters or calling
card. I did have a situation when I could not locate a "world leader",
hidden in a tiny plaza, my cellular phone was discharge and I had no money to
call my agent!
- Have company directions. Make sure you clearly understand where the company
located, contact maps (http://www.mapquest.com
or http://www.expedia.com) Keep a map
in your bag which you will take to the interview.
- I did not say that, but usually you need 2-3 years of experience even
for entry level position. Think where could you get those. :-)
